Grosmont’s Magic Blue Bell Carpet – River Esk Mirk Esk And Stunning Blue Bell Woods.
A few years back I was told of the wonderful blue bell woods that lay somewhere between Grosmont and Beck Hole.
During the first lockdown of the Covid Pandemic I attempted to find the bluebells by walking from Beck Hole village to Grosmont Station. However on that occasion I was on the wrong footpath so totally missed them.
After asking advice from a few more friends I made another attempt to fond the blue bells during late April of 2022. With the help of a couple of walkers I was able to get to the right location but sadly the blue bells were not in flower on that visit.
Isn’t nature truly wonderful. Just ten days after my first visit to the woods at Grosmont I returned today and was met by a magic carpet of Blue Bells along the woodland floor stretching in every direction as far as the eye could see.

My walk took me from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway station at Grosmont, past the village church and on into the woods. Exact directions here soon.
I imagine that even without the blue bells this walk could be wonderful at any time of year. The Mirk Esk river which flows near by offers some wonderful scenery and I imagine the Autumn colours could be quite spectacular in this area too, perhaps that could be a video for later in the year.
Directions To The Blue Bell Woods At Grosmont
Plentiful parking can be found within Grosmont. Free parking can be found on the roadside opposite the village cricket pitch. The walk to the blue bells takes rough 20 minutes.
To find the blue bell woods :
- Walk through the village to the railway station.
- Take the road/bridelway from Front Street.
- Cross The Fords, be careful as the are slippy underfoot and impassable after rain.
- Continue on the bridleway heading toward The Barn at Green End (Check this location on Google Maps)
- Before you reach the Barn, bare right into the woods.
- Continue for 1/4 of a mile and the blue bells will be there.
